“Once Upon A Time” Start An Adopted Child’s Story
If the idea of sitting down and writing out your child’s story in first person as the parent overwhelms you, consider taking yourself somewhat out of the equation and instead, writing it as a novel style of book. One of the scrapbooks in our store says, “Once Upon a Time…” Tell your child’s story this way can not only be an opportunity for you to be able to get down on paper the little things that you value and deem important, but it can also be a way that your child may be able to enjoy with his story in a way that he may not be able to otherwise.
You may wish to take into consideration to write out the story of your child in a way that demonstrates the reality of how he came to live with you and his adoption story. However, everything in the book may or may not fully represent exactly how everything took place. For example, if the birth mother of your child was coping with an addiction to drugs, you would obviously not put this into your child’s special storybook to read at bedtime. If your child however, was adopted from Los Angeles, rather than a foreign country, such as Korea, your child may find it exciting to feel as though she is the star of his story, simply because he relates to the little boy who was adopted from the same place he was.
You made me remember when you were a child, how in our mother’s magazines near the back page, a book could be ordered that told our personal story as a child. For a certain amount of money, our mother could send in a list of our favorite flavor of ice cream, the town in which we live in, and the name of our best friend. A few weeks later a storybook would arrive in the mail that made us feel like we were reading our story, because the child in the storybook had same favorite flavor of ice cream, lived in the same town, and had a best friend by the same name.
This can easily be done now with print on demand services where you can write out your child’s story, in a storybook or novel form, and have it printed and bound for less than $20.
Of course, you will need to find a place where you can tell the story of your family and how it came to be through keepsakes and your favorite photographs. This is where an adoption scrapbook can fill any voids you see while you are writing a more simplified storybook for your child to read at bedtime.
By providing him with a story about himself in a small, bound book, that describes everything from his backyard to how his mommy and daddy met him at the airport and hugged him so tightly, you will continue to give him the cast of security in a nonthreatening way.
In addition, as well and give you the chance to let go of any reluctance you may have in your abilities to create a life book for your child.
After all, despite our hard work to create an adoption scrapbook that we believe is beautiful and fully represents our experience, it is the small book that describes his experience that he will pull out of his book collection to share with his friends.
