Tiffany Style Lamps
Tiffany lamps are made with a variety of glass shades, handmade and each unique. Leaded glass lamps or Tiffany lamps were originally considered as part of the Art Nouveau movement. There is a great many styles of shade and base in the Tiffany style today but perhaps the most desirable are those based on the originals created by Tiffany & Co.
Tiffany Lamps, Origins and History
The first Tiffany lamp was made circa 1895. Beautiful and intricate, the lamps were handmade by skilled artisans and were never mass produced or machine made. For over a century, the design of these lamps was attributed to Louis Comfort Tiffany, who’s name has been attributed to these lamps. Recently, it has been discovered that an unrecognised single woman named Clara Driscoll was in fact the master designer behind these beautiful and precious objects.
Born on April 2, 1881, Clara Driscoll her father at an early age and was together with her sisters was driven to pursue a higher education. Beginning at a design school in Cleveland and working for a local furniture maker, Clara later moved to New York and attended the then new Metropolitan Museum Art School. Hired by the famous Tiffany Studios, Clara worked there for over 20 years and was a lead designer on several of their projects including the the lamps, windows, mosaics and other artistic handmade objects in her time there.
Original Tiffany lamps included the famous Wisteria, Dragonfly, Peony, and from all accounts, Clara’s first, the Daffodil design.

Today, Tiffany lamps are ever popular. Whilst the majority produced are not made by the famed Tiffany & Co., the modern lamps still hark back to their original creators. Each lamp is still hand made and unique. Whilst mechanisation helps, each Tiffany style lamp is assembled by hand, including the soldering of each glass piece to create a one off decorative item that will be long treasured. It is the individuality, beauty and the ambiance these lamps create that makes them so desirable in the disposable world we live in. Invest in quality design and it will pay you back a thousand fold.
